Circa 1878 Civic Procession / Bookplate muling. Musante GW-134, Baker-Unlisted. White Metal. MS-63 (PCGS).32.9 mm. Brilliant and deeply reflective with strong satin frost on the devices. A bit handled in the fields but still visually striking. Very rare. As reported by Musante, S.K. Harzfeld of Philadelphia noted in his own December 7, 1878, sale that this piece was erroneously made. As he had a hand in the creation of the bookplate series and clearly worked directly with George Lovett, this is probably first-hand knowledge. Harzfeld bought the medal in the 1878 sale. This was probably for a client and one must wonder if it didn’t end up in the Baker Collection. He was collecting by this time but was not named as a direct participant in this sale.Ex William Spohn Baker Collection, to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania by bequest, November 15, 1897.
