Fr. 1218f. 1882 $1000 Gold Certificate. PMG Very Fine 25.One of the most important pieces in tonights sale and a note which is missing from many advanced holdings of large size United States paper money. Just eleven examples of this rare Lyons-Roberts signed 1882 Gold Certificate are known to survive. One is housed in the collection of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco.A portrait of Alexander Hamilton is seen at right. At center is a large brown spiked Treasury Seal with GOLD overprinted in gold letters. A large 1000 counter is found at left. Bold blue serial numbers are seen within gold panels at lower left and upper right. The engraved signatures of Lyons and Roberts are along the bottom frame line. The back design is elaborate and executed in vibrant orange-gold. A bald eagle with shield is at center while a large Roman numeral M counter is seen at left. This present piece shows quite nicely for the technical grade with good detail throughout and what appears to be even circulation at first glance. There are some well executed repairs which PMG notes Minor Repairs on the back of the holder. This note last sold for $176,000 in a 2013 auction. Since then, only one other example, a PCGS Very Fine 35 has sold twice, once for $293,000 in 2014 and the other for $270,000 in 2017. With the increase of the demand for rare United States currency, we expect this note to easily reach the $200,000 level.
