Friedberg 27 (W-22). 1878 $1 Legal Tender Note. PCGS Currency Very Fine 30.The bold courtesy autograph of President Ulysses S. Grant graces the face of this 1878 $1 Legal Tender Note. In fact, the 18th president of the United States signed the note twice on the face, once vertically at left then again across the center of the note. The signatures are strongly penned in period brown iron ink.pFr. 27 (W-22) displays the well known portrait of George Washington at center with a vignette of emColumbus in Sight of Land/em at the left. The overprints are in red, including a spiked Treasury Seal at left and oval shaped ornamental protector at right. The engraved signatures of Allison and Gilfillan are at bottom left and right. The back is executed in green and displays a large X across the center. The Legal Tender clause and anti-counterfeiting language are at right. There were 12,512,000 printed, though today just around 400 are known. The presently offered note displays moderate circulation with still boldly printed inks.
