Friedberg 85 (W-671). 1907 $5 Legal Tender Note. PCGS Currency Superb Gem New 68 PPQ.Exceptionally printed inks accentuate the design of this ever popular Legal Tender design type. The Pioneer Family vignette, engraved by Henry Gugler, is found at center. This type is commonly known by the "Woodchopper" nickname for the scene of a pioneer man holding an ax standing by a fallen tree with his family. "Old Hickory" Andrew Jackson is seen at left as engraved by Alfred Sealey. This Napier-McClung signed $5 is ideally centered with broad margins and pristine paper. Original plate and overprint embossing is clearly evident from the verso. This note is tied with three other examples atop the PCGS Currency population report for this catalog number. Neither PCGS Currency or PMG have graded a $5 Woodchopper above the 68 grade level. This is yet another affordable note that should attract many bidders. From CAA/Heritages sale of May 2002, lot 2594; Lyn Knights sale of October 2005, lot 257.
