Guthrie, Oklahoma. $10 1882 Brown Back. Fr. 485. The Capitol NB. Charter #4705. PMG Choice Very Fine 35. Serial Number 1.A cannon boomed loudly at high noon on April 22nd 1889, thus announcing that some two million acres mostly in Logan, Kingfisher, Payne, Canadian, and Oklahoma counties were now open for settlement. 50,000 people rushed into the area that same day. By sundown Guthrie went from a population of zero to around 10,000. The town prospered and in just under three years The Capitol National Bank of Guthrie opened for business. That title may sound like a misnomer, but most Oklahomans and history buffs can tell you the story of how in 1910 the larger and more ambitious Oklahoma City essentially legally stole the state capital seat from Guthrie. To be fair, The Capitol National Bank was only open from 1892 until 1904, so its name was always appropriate. During that lifespan of twelve years, the bank issued territorials only; 3,591 sheets to be exact. Prior to this discovery there were just three other survivors known. Those other three are a nice VF $20 and two low grade $10 brown backs. The $20 note sold for $32,200 in September of 2009. Fast-forward to Fall 2018 and that $20 note, while attractive, is now old news. Tonight collectors can compete for the new prize of Guthrie numismatics. The existence of this serial number one $10 brown back has caught everyone by surprise. While #1 notes do still slowly trickle out of family holdings, it has been more than six years since a new #1 Oklahoma or Indian Territory brown back has been discovered. The previous discovery was on Davis, IT. That $10 #1 brown back sold for $41,400 in the summer of 2012. All territorials are tightly held and rarely traded.
