San Francisco, California. $5 1870. Fr. 1136. The First National Gold Bank. Charter #1741. PCGS Currency Very Fine 30.An impressive offering of this coveted series shows light and even circulation, making for sensational detail at the grade level. These National Gold Bank Notes are some of the most prized Federal currency types and are rarely offered with this much appeal. The overprints remain exceptionally bright as well as bold primary design features and penned signatures. The important back shows a departure of the original series vignette of DeSoto Discovering the Mississippi for a more appropriate pile of contemporary Gold Coins. The coin vignette is very important as the detailed engraving is more visible on this note than most lower grades. PCGS notes "Repairs" which is very common for the type and executed quite well on this Five Dollar note. This is most certainly one of the nicest examples for the assigned grade available to the collecting community. From the Marc D. Cohen Collection.
