COLOMBIA. Banco de la República. 1 Peso Oro, August 6, 1938. P-385a.This is one of the most beautiful 20th century Latin American types. In the 1930s era of many commemorative coins in the Americas, this is a commemorative banknote issue and most unusual. It commemorates the 400th Anniversary of the Founding of Bogotá. Its beauty makes it justifiably popular with all world note collectors. Offered is a fully issued example with six-digit serial number (492423). The face has a medallic portrait in the center of Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada with flanking allegorical females floating in air. These vignettes are printed in blue within their perimeter frame upon a multi-color tint. The overall effect is three-dimensional. The commemorative back is brown with the titled historical scene crowded with individuals. A stunning example which will likely exceed four-figures.
