PCGS Currency Superb Gem New 68 PPQ.Four boardwalk margins surround this superbly preserved 1923 $1 Legal Tender Note that is among the finest graded examples of this one number type. The bright, creamy white paper provides the perfect canvas for darkly inked engraved design elements as well as bold red overprints. This example displays fancy serial number A7000B. Bold overprint embossing is clearly evident when viewing the back of the note. The centering and registration are ideal. Neither PCGS nor PMG has graded a finer example.<p><strong>1923 $1 Legal Tender Notes</strong><p><p>The $1 Legal Tender Notes of the Series of 1923 were a one year design type bearing only the Speelman-White signature combination. This ended decades of the previous design which in some form or another had been in use from the Series of 1869 to the Series of 1917 with only minor changes in overprint types, tint or back design. A new portrait of Washington, engraved by G.F.C. Smillie, featured the first president facing right rather than left as in the previous design.
