Friedberg 169 (W-3481). 1875 $100 Legal Tender Note. PCGS Currency Very Fine 35.Only 13 pieces are known of this rare 1875 $100 Legal Tender Note, and this is an exceptional example within that limited population. The face design is much the same as seen on the earlier 1869 $100 "Rainbow" note, with Lincoln portrayed at left, a small Liberty head at bottom center, and Reconstruction at right. For the 1875 series a pink decorative overprint is featured near top center, with a pink spiked Treasury Seal near bottom right. The serial numbers are blue and followed by a Maltese cross instead of a star at the end. The engraved signatures of Allison and New flank the small Liberty head at bottom center.
The back design is more intricate than on the 1869 notes, with 100 counters in the top corners and Roman numeral Cs in the bottom corners. The Legal Tender clause is at left along with anti-counterfeiting language. The circulation is light and even with bright paper and pronounced ink remaining. Of the three examples graded by PCGS this is the finest by a wide margin, with the next closest a Fine 15. Three of the known notes are permanently impounded in institutional collections with one in the National Numismatic Collection in the Smithsonian Institution and two more in the Bebee and Liebman collections at the ANA museum. From Stacks sale of May 1978, lot 789; Heritage Auctions sale of September 2005, lot 16936.
