1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 39-a, W-5195. Rarity-2. No Sprig Above Plow, Outlined Shield. EF-45 BN (NGC).,This handsome and fully original New Jersey copper is warmly toned in deep rose and copper brown. The strike is noticeably off center to 9 oclock with blank flan readily evident along the right borders on the obverse and reverse. The devices that are present display bold to sharp detail, however, which includes a clear date with the digits 787 particularly clear. A few tiny planchet pits are easily overlooked, as are swirls of ancient verdigris on the reverse within the shield and at the ornament after the word UNUM. There are no marks of note, and the appearance is quite smooth for a lightly circulated New Jersey copper. One of the more available die marriages in this series, Maris 39-a is a favorite among both type collectors and variety enthusiasts.,,
