Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Gettysburg Asylum for Invalid Soldiers. March 6, 1867. $1. Very Fine.;(Hoober 136-UNL) ABNC. Portrait of Major General John Reynolds, who was killed in action at Gettysburg, at left. Portrait of Major General George Meade, who commanded all Union forces at Gettysburg, at right. State seal at center. This was a receipt for a contribution to the asylum project which was to be built on the grounds of the formal battlefield near Cemetery Ridge. George Meade had been a member of the board for the project which was run by a group of investors from New York. Meade began to become suspicious of the New York groups actions and a resulting investigation determined that the entire project was a tax fraud scheme. The asylum never became a reality. This note was intended to be a receipt for $5 but has "ONE DOLLAR" printed over it in blue. A very rare reconstruction era piece with excellent portraits of Union figures. This issue is unplated in Hoober. A few small edge repairs are seen.
