KM-38; Cal-Type-102#889. VERY RARE. Bold clear overdate visible with the naked eye. Unlisted as a variety in Calico, and the only example seen at the grading services, hence finest graded though likely finest extant as well. Transitional type with Charles III portrait but with legends for Charles IV. A magnificent looking coin, and this would be true even if it were not the rare overdate. Without peers for technical qualities, but also having the aesthetic credentials to leave a lasting first impression when seen in hand, an impression that is nothing short of awe-inspiring. A luster charged glow pushes up through the overcast silvery clear tone, and produces an expansive quality to the fields. The perimeter of the coin is surrounded by crisp denticles, fully struck and razor sharp, with the balance of the coin equally well made and upon a near flawless flan. A coin that at once will become the centerpiece of any assemblage of coinage from Chile, and which is accompanied by a long and distinguished pedigree that is nearly as impressive as the coin itself.NGC MS-63.
