Fr-36; KM-220; AAH-8 (R). Type-II Portrait. RARE. Struck during the middle of the Second Northern War, by January of 1658 Karl X Gustav had moved beyond Poland and was engaged in battle with Denmark. Having laid siege to Haderslev after crossing the Little Belt, only two companies of Karl X Gustavs cavalry fell through the ice and the Swedes prevailed in taking all of the island of Funen from Denmark in the process. The coin offered here is a window into this historic period, with an exceptionally clear portrait of the king. The reverse is equally impressive with all of the devices nearly as struck for wear. What little damage from saltwater submersion is confined to the luster, with the stability of the gold itself having prevented serious injury. A seldom offered and highly desirable piece, and in a magnificent state of preservation. NGC Unc Details--Salt Water Damage.
