Just over a year after he was crowned king, Charles X left Sweden to engage in the Second Northern war (1655-60) against Poland-Lithuania, Russia, Brandenburg-Prussia and the Habsburg Monarchy. With the advancements in the Polish-Lithuanian territory at a halt he turned his attention back home where the army of Frederick III of Denmark had invaded the Swedish mainland in 1657. Crossing the frozen straits in the winter of 1657-58 he was able to catch the Danish monarch off-guard and forced him to surrender. In the treaty of Roskilde in 1658, the Danes had to abandon all their territory in what is now southern Sweden. Well struck, attractive and lightly toned which deepens towards the edge.NGC AU-53.
