NORWAY. 2 Ducat, ND (1669-1670?). Christiania Mint. Frederik III. NGC MS-66★.Fr-5b (Norway); Fr-96 (Denmark); KM-A119 (Norway, mistakenly listed with date 1670); Hede-39 (Denmark); Sieg-139 (Denmark); Sieg-73 (Norway); NMD-5A; Schou-6; Aagaard-7.5; Bruun-6738. Weight: 6.55 gms. Mintmaster: Frederik Grüner. Engraver: Jonas Lunder. An almost unfathomable Gem 66-star with a stupendous luster bouncing from the perfect fields. A warm orange toning delicately hugs the untouched and lightly mat devices further adding to the unparalleled eye appeal. To the best of our knowledge the present piece is nothing less than the finest Norwegian Ducat of all in private ownership.
An excessively rare type of which Aagaard only knows of four examples struck with this beautiful obverse die: One in the Danish National Museum, one in the Hermitage, the present, and one other piece which Bruun acquired with the Guildal collection. This was sold as #2760 in the Bruun collection of duplicates and have since then passed through important collections like Ragoczy and Zinck.
As this type doesnt bear St. Olavs axe-bearing lion or for that matter other design elements normally associated with Norway it has until recently been assumed to have been struck in Copenhagen. Jonas Lunder, who worked as an engraver at the Mint in Christiania from c. 1664 - 1682, was the first of a Norwegian "dynasty" of engravers comprising Anders Jonsen Lunder, the Elder, Gabriel Andersen Lunder, and Anders Jonsen Lunder, the Younger.
From the L. E. Bruun Collection.
Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922).
