DENMARK. 2 Ducat, 1688. Copenhagen Mint. Christian V. NGC MS-64.Fr-167; KM-395.2; Hede-23B; Sieg-93; Schou-4; Bruun-7036. Weight: 6.95 gms. Mintmaster: Gregorius Sesemann. A wonderfully detailed strike perfectly centered on a broad flan retaining almost full luster makes this near Gem a must have for the historically interested connaisseur of 17th century coins of colonial interest. Small die crack on the lower reverse as always.
The reverse offers a birds eye view of the Danish outpost on Africas Gold Coast, Fort Christiansborg (now Osu Castle), located in what is now Ghana along the Gulf of Guinea. The fortress became the Danish administrative headquarters of Guinea in 1685 and was predominantly used as a place of embarkation of enslaved local captives for the Danish colonies in the Caribbean.
The portrait of the king wearing a helmet is quite unique in Danish numismatics but is in fact very similar to the equestrian statue by the French sculptor Abraham-César Lamoreux. This statue, which can still be seen at the square of Kongens Nytorv in the center of Copenhagen. was erected in the same year as the present issue and could very well have served as inspiration. From the L. E. Bruun Collection.
Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922).
