DENMARK. 10 Ducat (Portugaloser), 1663. Copenhagen Mint. Frederik III. NGC AU Details--Obverse Damage.Fr-113; KM-Unlisted; Hede-61; Sieg-79 (incorrectly giving the date 1662); Schou-1; Aagaard-97.2 (62.1/63-1); Bruun-6398. Weight: 34.50 gms. Mintmaster: Johan Stichmann (IS). Engraver: Johan Blum. A marvelous, excessively rare and truly majestic piece that would befit any advanced collections of European Baroque gold coins.
Whether or not this issue, which was minted shortly before the death of Johan Stichmann, should be considered an off-strike in gold of a regular Speciedaler intended for the kings personal use is not quite clear, especially since the reverse die used is not known from any other examples, silver or gold. In total four 10 Ducats of this type (1662 and 1663) have been recorded by Aagaard.
The engraver Johan Blum (ca. 1599 - 1669) had been working as an engraver at the Mint in Bremen. In 1657 he was appointed medalist in Copenhagen by Frederik III and married a Dane. He was technically very accomplished and artistically his work is inspired by Sebastian Dadler. From the L. E. Bruun Collection.
Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922).
