1902 Morgan Silver Dollar. MS-67+ (PCGS).Stunning near-Ultra Gem quality for this scarcer Philadelphia Mint Morgan dollar issue. This is a fully struck, brightly lustrous coin that displays the satiny texture to the finish for which this issue is known. Silky smooth overall with a bight, brilliant appearance that offers abundant eye appeal.<p>This early 20th century Philadelphia Mint issue has been one of the more underappreciated in the Morgan dollar series. Q. David Bowers (1993) reports that Mint Sate coins were elusive before the 1930s, although few numismatists of the era noticed because, "Demand for high-grade specimens of the date was answered by Proofs." In later years Treasury Department releases greatly augmented the supply of Uncirculated examples but, unlike for many issues in this series, these releases date primarily to the late 1940s and 1950s; by the time of the most famous silver dollar releases of 1962 to 1964, the governments supply of 1902 dollars had already been largely, if not fully exhausted.<p>The releases of the mid-20th century have resulted in a generous supply of Mint State 1902 dollars that Bowers estimates as "probably well over 100,000." As with all classic U.S. Mint issues, however, there comes a grade level when an otherwise readily obtainable issue transitions to a major condition rarity. For the circulation strike 1902 Morgan dollar, that grade level is MS-67. In PCGS MS-67+ the Illinois Set coin is exceedingly rare from a condition standpoint and is tied for CC#1 for the issue.
