1893-S Morgan Silver Dollar. AU-55 (NGC).Superior quality and eye appeal for this fabled key date Morgan dollar issue. Minimally toned, the surfaces reveal wisps of iridescent gold toning as the coin rotates under a light. Both sides also readily reveal ample mint luster in a satin to modestly semi-reflective finish. Plenty of sharp to full striking detail remains, as well, further confirming the validity of the impressive AU-55 grade from NGC.<p>The 1893-S is a legendary Morgan dollar that ranks as the absolute rarity among circulation strikes of this type. A mere 100,000 pieces were produced and, unlike many issues in the series, the 1893-S saw significant release into commerce during the final years of the 19th century. Of course other examples remained in government storage until destroyed through melting; Q. David Bowers (1993) observes, "It may have been that tens of thousands of 1893-S dollars were melted under terms of the 1918 Pittman Act." As a result, the 1893-S is the most elusive Morgan dollar in Mint State. While survivors are eagerly sought at all levels of preservation, for discerning collectors without the means to pursue the Mint State rarities, only coins in the finest circulated grades will do. This appealing Choice AU will certainly have no difficulty finding its way into an advanced collection.PCGS# 7226. NGC ID: 255U.
