Undated (ca. 1878) George Washington / R. Chamberlaine Muling. Dies by John Adams Bolen and Joseph Merriam. Musante JAB W-4, Musante GW-691, Baker-526. White Metal. MS-62 (NGC).28 mm. Bright prooflike surfaces have essentially retained their full brilliance save for a bit of light handling in the open fields. Far nicer than most pieces of this period in this composition and prettier than the grade might suggest. Light, even hairlines are to blame, but they really arent aesthetically distracting. A very rare medal. Musante estimates just five examples in tin and three in copper. Indeed, they rarely appear for sale and Musante was unable to locate one to image for his references - either for that on Bolen medals or his more recent work on Washington medals - using composite images instead. This is the only example in our online archives, accompanying a copper impression. From the Claremont Collection. Earlier ex Donald M. Miller; Charles Litman; Q. David Bowers; our sale of the Tim Gabriele Collection, November 2017 Baltimore Auction, lot 266.
