Undated (ca. 1878) George Washington / Soldiers Fair Muling. Dies by John Adams Bolen. Musante JAB W-1, Musante GW-680, Baker-366. Copper. MS-66 RB (PCGS).27.7 mm. Generous original rosy-red on the obverse with soft blue and violet overtones in the fields and on the highest areas of the portrait. The reverse is similarly toned, but a bit more deeply so. Nicely struck with strong reflectivity in the fields. According to Musante, it is believed that just five examples were struck in copper, and even fewer in white metal, making this a very rare issue overall. We have only a single impression from the dies in our archives and it is this very medal, that had been off the market likely since the time it was struck and entered the William Spohn Baker Collection. From the Claremont Collection. Earlier from the William Spohn Baker Collection, to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania by bequest, November 15, 1897; our Baltimore Auction of November 2019, lot 20497.
