Undated (1801-1814) George III Indian Peace Medal. Silver. Second Size. Second Reverse. Adams 8.2 (Obverse 1, Reverse B). Extremely Fine.60.5 mm. 741.1 grains. Original ornamental suspension hanger intact. Unsigned dies. Obv: Youthful armored bust right of George III. Rev: Arms and supporters with Hannoverian charge (after 1801). Fairly light to medium silver gray with some deeper toning at the rims, outlining the motifs and through the recesses of the devices. A trace of champagne toning is noted on the obverse while a blush of soft blue is seen at the left reverse. Quite sharply detailed with a couple of trivial rim anomalies and the usual array of fine marks and scratches seen on issued and worn Peace Medals. None of these features is severe enough to be the least bit distracting, however, and the eye appeal is lovely. The hanger swings freely but seems securely affixed. A fairly rare medal and much scarcer than the first size pieces, with Adams-8 represented in John Adams "Modern Census" by just 16 specimens, seven of which were in institutional collections. We have since seen a 17th example (and it is uncertain if this is among those known to Adams), but it remains that very few are available to collectors. Six of the 10 listed by Adams are from this second reverse die.
