1781 (post-1789) Lieutenant Colonel William Washington, Battle of the Cowpens Medal. Original. Paris Mint. Betts-594, Adams-Bentley 11. Golden Bronze. MS-64 (PCGS).46.5 mm. 45.0 grams. Plain concave edge. A fascinating piece, definitely an original based on die state (Adams-Bentley 2) and the concave edge, but in a fabric that we cannot recall seeing before in a bronze striking. Lovely golden-brown color overall with light rose-brown patina through the centers, peripheries with handsome olive highlights. Subtle traces of carbon within the reverse wreath, a trivial obverse mark in the field between the wreath held by fame and the sword, and a small spot at 4 oclock on the obverse border are the only mentionable blemishes, and all are expectably minor for the assigned grade. This is one of the most significant William Washington at Cowpens medals we have brought to auction in recent years (which is saying a lot given our extensive offerings for the type), and it is sure to elicit strong bids from advanced Comitia Americana collectors.
