DENMARK. Schleswig-Holstein. Silver Speciedaler Pattern (Restrike), 1799-M/MF. Altona Mint. Christian VII. NGC PROOF-62.KM-Pn3c; Hede-39F; Sieg-53; Schou-6; Bruun-7945. Weight: 27.44 gms. Mintmaster: Michael Flor. Engraver: John Milton. Wonderfully toned proof restrike.
The original patterns of 1799, 1800, and ND were all engraved in London by either Milton or the Danish engraver Bauert, who was in London in connection with the Danish Royal Mint considering buying a Boulton Press . The patterns themselves were struck both in London and in Copenhagen. Around 1890 L. E. Bruun commissioned a number of restrikes of Danish medals from the Royal Mint, and it is likely that this and the other pattern restrikes were commissioned at the same time. It is possible, however, that the restrikes are much older. The Royal Mint continued selling restrikes up until 1971; from 1915 with an N (for Nypræg-restrike) on the rim. From the L. E. Bruun Collection.
