DENMARK. Gold Off-Metal Strike 2 Skilling, 1778-CHL. Altona Mint. Christian VII. NGC Unc Details--Reverse Scratched.Fr-unlisted; KM-631.2; Hede-33B; Sieg-4.2; Schou-13a; FP-7.3; Bruun-7802. Weight: 3.39 gms. Mintmaster: Caspar Henrich Lyng. Engraver: Johan Henrik Wolff. Apart from a few superficial marks in the obverse field, an absolutely choice example of an excessively rare and largely unlisted type struck on a gold planchet with the approximate weight of a Ducat.

The reason behind this off-strike in gold is speculative, but the perfect strike combined with the fact that 1778 is the first date of a new type, could indicate that the present piece functioned as a presentation piece. This hypothesis is further strengthened by the fact that it was struck on a specially made flan, and not just for instance on a Danish Courant Ducat as the corresponding Norwegian 2 Skillings (see for instance, OM 17, 1986, lot 263 and lot 265).
From the L. E. Bruun Collection.
