DENMARK. Speciedaler, 1596. Copenhagen Mint. Christian IV. NGC AU-55.Dav-8232; Hede-45; Sieg-95; Schou-4; Bruun-4624. Weight: 29.59 gms. Mintmaster: Geert van Campen. Engraver: Nicolaus Schwabe. A vibrant luster penetrates the warm toning on this truly grand example of a highly elusive one-year type.
This is the largest from a set of 6 denominations with a very uniform design for the kings coronation on 29 August 1596. As opposed to the minor coins (16, 8, 4, 2, 1 Skilling) which were used as largesse money, the Specietaler was probably struck for presentation pieces for wedding guests and other dignitaries.

From the L. E. Bruun Collection.
Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922).
