DENMARK. Lion Taler, 1608. Elsinore (Helsingør) Mint. Christian IV. NGC VG Details--Cleaned.Dav-3515 (Norway); KM-4 (Norway); Hede-65; Sieg-89; Schou-9; Bruun-4776. Weight: 25.61 gms. Mintmaster: Hans Flemming. Of the utmost rarity with the only other registered example being in the National Museum of Denmark.
The imagery has been quite closely copied from the Dutch so-called Leeuwendaalder (Lion Daalder) and the whole mintage of 765 specimens was intended for promoting international trade with the Dutch. The remarkable degree of wear for a coin of this size shows that it must have been a success. The axe-bearing Norwegian Lion used on the reverse has wrongly made some catalogers believe that the coin itself is also Norwegian. A utterly charming survivor of one of the most interesting types from the reign of Christian IV.
From the L. E. Bruun Collection.
Ex: Joh. G. Guildal Collection (Private Sale - 1918); later published by the Danish Numismatic Society as item 505 in his collection.
Ex. C. F. Pogge Collection (Frankfurt - 1903) Lot # 379.
