DENMARK. Silver Gulden (Taler), 1545. Flensburg Mint. Christian III. NGC VF-35.Dav-8236; Hede-16; Sieg-46; Schou-2; Bruun-4300. Weight: 28.69 gms. Mintmaster: Jørgen Degener. With just a hair-line split in the flan to detract from a formidable eye-appeal this is a wonderfully desirable example of this excessively rare one-year type. The portrait is clearly inspired by the works of the German artist Jacob Binck who was appointed painter to king Christian, and might in fact be his work.
The Royal Flensburg mint was established in 1544 as the former mint in Gottorp had passed to the kings half-brother. It was in use for only 27 years, from 1544 until 1571, when it was turned into a bell foundry. From the L. E. Bruun Collection.
Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922).
