COSTA RICA. Republica de Costa Rica. 50 Colones, 1897. P-134s. Specimen. PMG Choice About Uncirculated 58 EPQ. The 50 Pesos from the 1897 Gold Certificate series. From a print run of 13,000 notes, this is an exceptionally rare issue in any format. According to the book Historia de los Billetes de Costa Rica 1858-2012 by Jose Alberto Carranza Astua there are just two issued notes known, along with two specimens. The number of specimens known may have increased a bit since the PMG population report shows that there are three presently graded. Regardless, this is anything but a regularly available note, and is surely missing from even the most advanced Costa Rican collections. In fact, in our lengthy auction history, we have never offered an example of this type in any format. An important opportunity to acquire an exceptionally rare Costa Rican note with a fantastic design, seen here with oversized margins. PMG Comments "Selvage Included."
