(t) HONG KONG. Copper Dollar Pattern, 1865. London Mint. Victoria. PCGS Genuine--Rim Damage, EF Details. KM-Pn114; Mars-Unlisted; Prid-205; Boon-Unlisted. Very few issues from the Hong Kong series can match the importance and desirability of this Pattern Dollar on the strength of its merits. Proceeding the circulation issue Hong Kong Dollars produced between 1866-1868, this trial in copper largely mirrors the accepted style of the adopted designs. Of course, its composition in copper and the word "TRIAL" behind Victorias head highlight the transitory nature of this piece. While it is unknown how many examples of this Pattern were produced, that number surely cannot be great, as the paucity of traded examples confirms. We have not offered an example of this type since 2015, and we have been unable to trace any other example trading since that point. The present example is strongly struck, with good details present and a wholesome chocolate brown color to the surfaces. Wear is even and consistent, and no general effacement of the details has occurred. The noted unfortunate edge damage can be seen at the peripheries, with a few knock marks circumnavigating the rims. Despite these minor drawbacks, this example is certain to command a bevy of attention, as examples of this EXTREMELY RARE type are exceedingly difficult to locate with any frequency.
