(t) CHINA. Brass Dollar Pattern, Year 22 (1933). Shanghai Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-63. cf. L&M-109 (for regular issue); cf. K-623x (copper); cf. KM-Pn138 (copper); cf. WS-0145A (for regular issue). Weight: 23.33 gms. The only pattern struck in this composition across both major services, this nicely preserved and fully original specimen exhibits smooth, glossy surfaces that display rich, slightly mottled, brassy patina. The devices are boldly struck, with good definition of the finer details seldom encountered on the silver versions-- an aspect that makes it immensely pleasing to the eye . In general, Chinese off-metal patterns of adopted designs RARELY appear on the market, let alone one of the most recognizable issues from the series. An exceptional opportunity for advanced collectors hunting elusive types, and one that is sure to see spirited bidding. According Eduard Kann, who was a member of the Advisory Mint Committee during this time, the silver versions of this issue dated to Year 22 were struck between June 1933 and May 1934, with the original dies prepared at the Philadelphia Mint. It was a slightly modified design from the Year 21 issues, with the birds and rising sun having been removed in favor of a more simplistic reverse. The off-metal strikes, in brass, copper, or other compositions, represent special presentation pieces of the adopted design. Ex: Irving Goodman Collection (Superior - 6/1991) Lot # 913.
