1887 International Medical Congress Medal. Musante GW-1038, Baker F-378, Julian-Unlisted. Bronze. Specimen-65 (PCGS). 76 mm. Gorgeous autumnal orange-brown surfaces exhibit modest, yet appreciable semi-reflectivity in the fields. Otherwise satiny in texture, both sides are silky smooth. Though this medal is not listed in Robert W. Julians definitive work on medals of the U.S. Mint, we have long suspected that this piece was in fact struck there. This is in part due to the fact that Charles Barber was the chief engraver when this medal was produced, and there were probably very few facilities that had equipment that could execute the striking pressure required for such a large medal at the time. Scarce, large, and distinctively styled. A really lovely Washington medal of the late 19th century. From the Ken Beukelaer Collection of Washington Pieces. Earlier ex our Americana Sale of February 2014, lot 74; Anthony Terranova, November 2016. Collector tags with attribution and provenance notes included.
