Fr. 18. 1869 $1 Legal Tender Note. PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ.Notes from this series are popularly referred to as Rainbow Notes, due to the vivid blue, green and red inks found. The 1869 series is among the most desirable of all American federal currency, and it is easy to see why. The $1 offered here portrays George Washington within an oval frame at center. The portrait was engraved by Alfred Sealey and was based on the famous painting by Gilbert Stuart. At left is the vignette Columbus in Sight of Land as engraved by Joseph P. Ourdan. Brilliant green and blue undertint permeates through the third party holder, giving exceptional appeal to this flashy Gem Ace. The serial numbers stand out in bold dark red ink. This type features the engraved signatures of Treasury officials Allison and Spinner at the bottom left and right respectively. The back is intricately printed in green with the imprint of the National Banking Company at bottom center. Legal Tender and anti-counterfeiting clauses are found in a panel at right. Excellent lathe work is showcased on the back in geometric shapes offering art-like appeal from a by-gone era.
