1838-D Classic Head Half Eagle. HM-1, Winter 1-A, the only known dies. Rarity-3. EF Details--Scratch (PCGS).A boldly defined and aesthetically pleasing example of this historically significant Southern gold issue. Bathed in warm honey-orange color, both sides also display considerable softly frosted luster. Most handing marks are small and inconspicuous; the PCGS qualifier concerns a thin, shallow scrape coming off of Libertys nose. The 1838-D is the first Dahlonega Mint half eagle and the only one of the Classic Head design type, explaining the desirability of survivors at all levels of preservation. It is also a scarce issue with Daryl J. Haynor (2020) estimating that only 200 or so coins are extant.PCGS# 8178. NGC ID: 25S6.From the Fairmont Collection - CAG Set.
