Proof-66+ RB (PCGS).The obverse and reverse designs are the same that the Mint used to coin regular issue 1870 Liberty Head quarter eagles. This delightful premium Gem exhibits deep rose-brown color on both sides, the reverse with an overlay of mottled sandy-copper patina. The surfaces reveal considerable pinkish-orange mint color as the coin dips into a light. Crisply impressed with full striking detail and a soft, satin to modestly semi-reflective finish. As described by the <em>uspatterns.com</em> website, "Although these are described as regular die trial pieces in the standard references, it is more likely that the off-metal trials of this year were deliberately struck for sale to collectors."
