Anthony: "Despite a large reported mintage this is a surprisingly hard-to-find coin today. This is partly due to its popularity for use in jewelry. Another attrition factor was that the mid-nineties was a period when many other series of Chinese coins were in the spotlight. Collectors, or even hoarders, for small Pandas at that time were few. Many of these coins may have been melted. What is indisputable is that these are scarce coins today." Actual mintage for both mints: 55,182; estimated extant population for this variety <2,700.
