One of only 21 pieces at MS 70 in the current NGC census for this variety. Anthony: "Despite a large reported mintage this is a surprisingly hard-to-find coin today… partly because so many were used in jewelry. Another attrition factor was the melting pot." His survival estimate is just over 3%. Unlike the largest denominations, the difference between the small- and large-date varieties is easy to see in this denomination. Mintage for both mints: 100,000 planned, 158,364 actual, with an estimated extant population of <3,100 for this variety. Pedigreed to the Gansu Collection of Chinese Panda Coinage.
