1844-D Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter 11-G. EF-45 (NGC). An engaging honey-gold example with intermingled pale olive highlights on both sides. Detail is impressively sharp for a Dahlonega Mint gold coin, especially one that saw light commercial use. The 1844-D is one of the more frequently encountered issues in this Southern gold series, but it is still scarce in an absolute sense with no more than 500 coins believed extant in all grades. Most are well circulated and nowhere near as appealing as this sharp and lustrous Choice EF. PCGS# 8221. NGC ID: 25T9.
