1872-CC Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter 1-B. AU Details--Tooled (PCGS). A coin with quite a lot going for it despite the stated qualifier. The surfaces are vivid deep orange and pinkish-gold with nearly full mint luster in a lively satin to softly frosted texture. Well struck for the issue, we note only the typical softness through the centers. Evidence for tooling, as noted by PCGS, is difficult to come by, and it will take some patience and persistence to locate an area of minor moved metal in the left reverse field at the letters ED in UNITED. Really a lovely example, and an issue that is always in demand as an early half eagle from the Carson City Mint. From the Fairmont Collection-Hendricks Set.
