1872 Liberty Head Half Eagle. EF-45 (PCGS). CAC. A seldom offered issue, represented here by a richly original Choice EF. Glints of deep rose iridescence enhance otherwise honey-olive color. Traces of luster persist, most design elements remain bold and there is only light wear. The Philadelphia Mint produced 1,660 circulation strike half eagles in 1872, one of the lowest mintages in the entire Liberty Head series. Survivors are elusive in all grades, with PCGS CoinFacts accounting for just 50 to 65 coins extant, mostly in grades of AU-53 and lower. Few EFs, however, are as original and problem free as the Fairmont-Hendricks specimen offered here. From the Fairmont Collection-Hendricks Set.
