1907 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle. MS-65 (PCGS). CAC. OGH. A remarkably smooth and undisturbed Gem with strong satin luster across both sides. Overall yellow-gold color is accented by hints of rich honey shades throughout. A conditionally rare specimen from this historic issue. This final year Liberty Head quarter eagle would do exceptionally well in a high grade type set.
Theodore Roosevelts "pet crime" to remake and modernize American coins spelled the end for Christian Gobrechts Liberty Head design that had been in use on the quarter eagle, half eagle, and eagle for almost 70 years. The quarter eagles time for redesign came in 1908. The quarter eagle was not as frequently required in daily use as the half eagle, and by the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the denominations production was limited to the Philadelphia Mint. Only 336,294 quarter eagles were coined in 1907. Many were saved, with several thousand in Uncirculated condition, mostly between MS-62 and MS-64. At the Gem level, the issue becomes very scarce.
From the Dr. Paul and Rosalie Zito Collection. Acquired September 17, 1996.
