1878 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle. MS-65 (NGC). Gorgeous rose-gold patina mingles with frosty mint luster across this lovely Gem. The complexion is enhanced by strong prooflike reflectivity in the fields. In 1878 the Philadelphia Mint recorded only its second generous mintage of circulation strike quarter eagles since the outbreak of the Civil War with a mintage of 286,240 coins. (The first was in 1873.) Plentiful as an issue by the standards of the type, the 1878 is rare in the finest Mint State grades, as here. From the Dr. Paul and Rosalie Zito Collection. Acquired February 27, 2003.
