SICILY. Gela. AR Tetradrachm (17.35 gms), ca. 480/75-475/70 B.C. NGC AU, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 5/5. HGC-2, 338; Jenkins-165.2 (O44/R101; this coin); cf. SNG ANS-35 & 38 (same obv./rev. die). Obverse: Charioteer, holding kentron and reins, driving quadriga right; above, crowning Nike flying right; Reverse: Forepart of man-headed bull right; all within incuse circle. A resounding specimen from a RARE die pairing of which Jenkins recorded just two other examples, this monumental piece presents very little in the way of handling along with a very attractive tone and well centered strike. The design and detail of the man-headed bull in particular is sharp and engaging, while the spectacular pedigree augments its allure that much more.
