1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 37-J, W-5140. Rarity-5+. No Sprig Above Plow, Goiter. Fine-15 (PCGS). 161.7 grains. Glints of brick-red and emerald-olive blend with dominant copper-brown patina. The former colors are associated with ancient surface build up and verdigris, the surfaces somewhat rough overall, yet with no sizeable marks. The strike is well centered on both sides, the detail coming up short only at the right obverse and reverse borders. DS 1, with a substantial goiter break and an additional break below the plow bar left of the coulter. There are a fair number of examples of Maris 37-J at the Fine grade level, but not many better, the Siboni-Howes-Ish Condition Census (published 2013) beginning at VF+. From the Norman G. Peters Collection.
