1893 Worlds Columbian Exposition Award Medal in Original Case. By Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Charles E. Barber. Eglit-90. Bronze. Mint State. 75.3 mm. Glossy olive and dark caramel brown with fine satiny luster. A couple of tiny spots are noted, nestled into the recesses. Awarded to Salem Press Publishing and Printing Company, which was the employer of Eben Putnam, the son of Frederick Ward Putnam. The award was given "For Books, Charts and Engravings" on display in the Department of Liberal Arts, Group 150. The original decorative aluminum case of issue is present and well-preserved. Also included in this lot is an Official Ribbon Associated with this Medallic Award. Blue silk. Approximately 20 inches x 4 inches, including the tassel. As with the medal itself, it gives the exhibitor (Salem Press), references the Department of the Exposition (Department-L) and that it was a "Premium Award" for "Books, Charts and Engravings." The ribbon is spectacular, in blue woven silk, tasseled at the bottom and printed in gilt. The condition is superb, with virtually no evidence of wear. We have seen images of similar ribbons, but those were described as "paper ribbons" and seem to have been simply printed on paper. This is of a completely different and most impressive character.
