1854-FD Octagonal $1. BG-603. Rarity-6+. Liberty Head. AU-53 (PCGS). Dusted with pale silvery tinting, otherwise honey-gold surfaces also reveal vivid pinkish-rose undertones. Plenty of satiny luster remains, as does universally bold striking detail. A planchet flaw at 3 oclock relative to the obverse is partially obscured by the PCGS holder, but serves as a useful provenance marker. This is one of Frontier, Deviercy & Co.s more significant type varieties in the California small denomination gold series, since it is one of only two that features the so-called "Broad Bust" portrait. (The other "Broad Bust" variety is BG-602, and both share the same obverse device punch.) Very scarce in an absolute sense and rare in Mint State, a single MS-62 at NGC is the only Uncirculated example listed by the two major third party certification services. From the Oregon Collection. Old collector envelope with attribution notation (Lee-3B) and purchase price of $425 included.
