1856-S/S Liberty Seated Quarter. Briggs 4-E, FS-501. Large/Small S. EF Details--Environmental Damage (PCGS). A boldly to sharply defined example with glints of olive-russet to dominant pewter-gray patina. The surfaces are rough and pitted overall, especially at the left obverse and reverse borders, thereby explaining the PCGS qualifier. Remnants of a small S show clearly to the right of the primary large S mintmark. An interesting and elusive variety that is seldom seen, never in high grades. In fact, PCGS has not graded an example finer than EF-45, NGC has seen a couple of AU-58s. Likely unknown in Mint State, this more affordable Extremely Fine example represents a significant offering for the specialist. From the Lincoln Square Collection.
