1945-S Jefferson Nickel--Struck on a 3.3-Gram Silver Planchet--AU-58 (PCGS). The diminutive (relative to the nickel dies) planchet upon which this coin is struck is heavier than that of the contemporary Mercury dime, suggesting that it may have been intended for a foreign denomination. Struck flush to the lower obverse and upper reverse borders, much of the remaining peripheral detail on both sides is partially or fully off the planchet. The date and mintmark are complete, however, and we note only a trace of light high point rub precluding a Mint State grade. Lustrous and brilliant for this rare and intriguing wrong planchet error, one whose desirability is enhanced by the brevity of the Wartime Jefferson nickel series of 1942 to 1945.
