1828 Capped Bust Half Dollar. O-117. Rarity-1. Square Base 2, Small 8s, Large Letters. MS-64 (NGC). Direct lighting calls forth vivid multicolored undertones from both sides of this otherwise steel-gray and copper-russet example. The undertoning is truly magnificent and exhibits a target-like distribution to the colors that is particularly pronounced on the obverse. The surfaces are smooth and satiny with all major design elements sharply to fully struck. Curiously for a variety that is plentiful in an absolute sense, this is the first Mint State survivor from the 1828 O-117 dies that we have handled in recent memory. Tied for CC#2 per the listing in the Spring 2021 revision to Stephen J. Herrmans AMBPR for Bust half dollars, this beautiful near-Gem will appeal to both high quality type collectors and discerning Bust half dollar enthusiasts.
