Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Manual Labor Bank. 1837 $1. PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.(PA-445 G50) Hoober 305-355, Plate A. 18__ Proof. No POCs. Imprint of Underwood, Bald, Spencer & Hufty. Printed on India paper only. The central vignette is the ever-popular glass blowing scene with the one standout figure a remarkable likeness of white jumpsuit Elvis with sideburns. Circular portraits of Dr. Dyott at right end, William Penn at left end. Issued notes are darn common but proofs are really quite rare. The only four examples sold by us were part of the Haverford collection of 2008 and originally from the sale of the Western Reserve collection. The bank was only in operation for a short time from 1836 to 1838. This is a piece of impeccable quality and character that should be coveted by the serious obsolete proof collector.
